ThickThug EP delivers 13 minutes of restless melody, raw energy and mysterious sounds in a bold, unexplained listening experience.
There is something quietly interesting about the way PureGrace introduces himself on his EP titled l ThickThug.
It is not a long project. Only four songs which barely run up to thirteen minutes, and then it is over. There is no grand opening statement, zero unnecessary skit and no attempt to convince you that you are witnessing the arrival of the next big thing. Instead, PureGrace seems more interested in creating a mood and letting the listener figure out what to make of it; that restraint works in his favour.
The ThickThug EP feels like the work of an artist who is still discovering the exact shape of his sound but already understands that music is not only about sound. It is also about character. The titles alone – “Real Talk,” “Suffering From Riches,” “ThickThug” and “Marijuana” – suggest somebody playing with ideas of money, identity, excess, conversation and escape. There is a slightly mischievous quality to the project, but underneath it sits something more thoughtful: a young artist trying to construct a world around himself. Most importantly, the four songs do not feel like four unrelated attempts to prove versatility. They feel connected.
“Real Talk” gives the project room to breathe. It does not arrive like a song desperate to announce itself. There is an ease to its pacing, and that makes the listener settle into PureGrace’s presence before the project begins to push harder. The song also establishes one of the most useful qualities running through the EP: his sound does not constantly chase maximum intensity. It is noteworthy because, contemporary Nigerian music can sometimes confuse energy with excitement. Everything – the drums, the hook, the bass, the attitude – is expected to hit immediately, but PureGrace seems more comfortable allowing a song to find its own temperature.
Then comes “Suffering From Riches,” and the project begins to move. Even the title is a contradiction. Riches are supposed to solve problems. To suffer from them suggests that the reward has become another kind of burden. It is a clever phrase because it immediately complicates the usual language of aspiration that dominates so much contemporary Nigerian music. Wealth is rarely presented as something to question; it is usually the destination. Here, PureGrace seems interested in what happens when the destination becomes complicated.
Musically, the EP becomes more restless around this point. The production feels fuller and more forward-moving, and the contrast with “Real Talk” helps the project avoid settling into one pocket. The songs have different levels of pressure – some leave space; others push the listener along.
That becomes particularly important when “ThickThug,” the title track, arrives.
The name itself is probably the clearest clue to what PureGrace is attempting. “ThickThug” sounds like a persona before it sounds like a song title. There is something deliberately contradictory in it: toughness alongside sensuality, menace alongside playfulness, street language alongside something almost cartoonish. It does not sound like a carefully neutral artist name, rather the sound is that of a person inventing a character and then deciding to inhabit it. The title track gives the project a centre. The song also carries the most obvious sense of performance as PureGrace seems less interested in simply presenting himself than in exaggerating himself. The title becomes an attitude and the record becomes a place where tat attitude can exist without having to explain itself.
That is one of the reasons ThickThug EP is more interesting than it might initially appear.
There is a looseness to the project that suggests PureGrace understands that an emerging artist does not necessarily need to arrive fully formed. He can be strange, playful, excessive. And he can experiment with how he wants to be perceived. In fact, that uncertainty may be one of the most appealing things about the EP.
“Marijuana,” changes the temperature and the track is an interesting sonic project. PureGrace could have closed with the title track and left the listener with the most obvious statement of the EP's personality. Instead, he moves into something less confrontational and allows the project to exhale – which makes the sequencing feel considered.
ThickThug starts with conversation, moves towards ambition and excess, arrives at identity, and ends somewhere more hazy. There is no grand conclusion, just a sonic project simply fading back into its own
For an EP this short, that is probably the right instinct. The production throughout the project also benefits from not sounding as though every song has been forced through exactly the same template. There is a noticeable variation in rhythmic feel and intensity, and that keeps the four songs from collapsing into one long track. The mixes are contemporary and relatively loud, but the individual songs retain different amounts of dynamic movement. “Marijuana,” in particular, leaves more room for shifts in energy, while “Real Talk” feels comparatively contained. That variation is important because PureGrace’s biggest strength right now may not be technical virtuosity. It is personality.
With a plethora of young Nigerian artists who can make a competent Afrobeats record, competence seems no longer enough; the harder thing is creating something that makes a listener curious about the person behind the music.
PureGrace’s “ThickThug” EP does that, making you wonder who PureGrace is or what exactly does “ThickThug” mean to him? Is it a character, a lifestyle, an alter ego, a joke, or some combination of all four? Is “Suffering From Riches” simply a catchy contradiction, or is it part of a larger preoccupation with the uncomfortable side of getting what you want?
ThickThug EP does not answer those questions which is both its strength and its weakness.
As an introduction, ambiguity is attractive but as a complete artistic statement, it leaves some things unresolved. PureGrace has created the outline of a personality, but he has not yet filled in every detail. The next stage of his sonic development will be seeing whether these ideas can become a recognisable artistic language rather than isolated moments of cleverness because ultimately, being different is not the same thing as being distinctive.
What makes the EP worthwhile is that it does not sound desperate to prove that point. It feels young without feeling careless, experimental without becoming inaccessible, and confident without constantly announcing its confidence.
There is also something refreshing about its scale. Four songs are enough to give us a glimpse without exhausting the idea and PureGrace does not attempt to tell us everything about himself. He gives us fragments – real talk, riches, the thug, the haze – leaving the listener to connect them.
PureGrace is not arriving on his EP with all the answers. He is introducing a personality, testing its edges and seeing what happens when that personality meets different sounds.
The project is brief, but it leaves behind a surprisingly clear question: what happens when PureGrace takes this identity further? That is where the real promise lies.
ThickThug EP may not be a definitive statement yet and it doesn’t need to be.
For now, it is something arguably more useful: a convincing introduction to an artist who seems to understand that before you can build a career around your music, you have to give people a reason to remember who made it.
