Governor Eno inaugurates committee to tackle illegal mining in Akwa Ibom, strengthen security, protect coastal areas, and ensure compliance.
Uyo, Akwa Ibom – Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, don inaugurate committee to fight illegal mining across the State. The ceremony happen August 19, 2025, at Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Uyo, shortly before the State Executive Council meeting.
Governor Eno yan say the rise of illegal mining, especially for coastal areas, dey worrying and need urgent action. He add say the committee dey large and all-encompassing to make sure the fight dey effective.
He talk: "The Ministry of Environment no fit handle this alone. Everybody must collaborate and back am with law. If we no check this menace, some people fit become security threat to our State. We want to know who dey mine, their profile, type of minerals, and who dem dey pay tax to."
Governor Eno warn strongly say anybody wey dey support illegal mining go face serious consequences. He call on Local Government Chairmen to monitor their areas well, act fast, and report any illegal activity.
The Governor also make reference to Ibeno where land sold to a company dey used as dump site for hazardous waste. He direct Commissioner for Lands to investigate and revoke all land procured by oil and gas servicing companies without government approval.
He urge committee to hit the ground running and submit monthly reports. Committee members include Commissioners for Special Duties, Transport, Internal Security, Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner of Police, Honorary Special Adviser on Security, ALGON Chairman, and Local Government Chairmen of coastal areas.
