Virgil van Dijk called on everyone connected to Liverpool to take pride in the club’s latest triumph and truly soak in the moment after securing the 2024–25 Premier League title. The Reds were crowned champions following a commanding 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, a result that put them out of reach at the top of the table and confirmed another historic campaign under new manager Arne Slot.

For Van Dijk, this marks his second Premier League title with the club, having also played a key role in the 2019–20 victory. But this one, he admitted, feels especially meaningful—not just for the football, but because fans were present to share the moment. The Liverpool captain, who has played every single minute of this season, will be the one to lift the trophy at Anfield on May 25.

Speaking in the aftermath of the win, Van Dijk described the emotional weight of the day. He praised the team’s consistency and resilience, particularly after falling behind in the game. “The reaction we showed after going 1-0 down today was outstanding. Obviously it was a very emotional game. The time goes very slow towards the end, by the way! But I’m glad we got the job done and now we – and I speak about obviously everyone who is Liverpool-connected – can enjoy and celebrate because that’s what you should do as well.”

He also pointed out the difference between this title and the one won during the pandemic. That first victory came without fans in the stands, something that made this season’s conclusion even sweeter. He called it an unforgettable experience, especially given the energy in the stadium and the weather, and said it was “incredible to be part of.” He reflected on how significant it is that Liverpool have now won two titles in five years, calling it a major achievement.

When asked about the prospect of winning the league after Jürgen Klopp’s departure was announced back in January, Van Dijk admitted there was some uncertainty. But he always had faith in his teammates. “We were still challenging as well for the title. I had a lot of confidence in my team… To replace Jürgen is a big job and I think the manager did it in his own way together with his staff. He definitely deserves a lot of credit for that.” He acknowledged that many people outside the club didn’t expect them to lift the trophy this year, but insisted that belief and consistent performance were what carried them through.

Looking ahead to the moment he lifts the trophy as captain, Van Dijk described it as a dream come true and something that will be deeply emotional for both him and his family. The anticipation had been building all week, he said, with the days feeling slow and heavy with expectation. On matchday, seeing the streets filled with fans in red only added to the weight of the occasion. “You just want to get the job done,” he said. “I’m very, very happy that we did and when the moment is there that I can lift the trophy in front of our beautiful supporters, I think I will be very emotional.”

Asked if there was a particular game that made him believe Liverpool would go all the way, he said it was never about just one match. Having been in title races before—some won, some lost—he’s learned the key is focusing only on your own team. Despite all the noise, all the distractions, he and his teammates kept their focus on themselves, their performances, and doing whatever it took to keep winning. “That’s still the most difficult thing in life, not only in football but in life: to be consistent. And if you have that consistency, just to keep it. I’m glad we did.”

Finally, Van Dijk credited the entire club for the success, stressing that this title was a team effort from top to bottom. Whether starting or coming off the bench, every player made an impact. Staff, support personnel at the AXA Training Centre, and the fans all played a vital role in pushing the team forward. From the very beginning of the season, there was a shared vision and belief that something special could be achieved—and in the end, that belief turned into silverware.

As Liverpool celebrate their return to the top of English football, Van Dijk’s message to fans and teammates is one of pride, gratitude, and the reminder to fully enjoy the fruits of their collective effort.
