Pope Francis to Be Laid to Rest on Saturday as the World Mourns a Humble and Historic Catholic Leader

Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. local time in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City. The Vatican has announced that his body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica from Wednesday through Friday, allowing the faithful to pay their respects.

Known for his humility and progressive views, Pope Francis was the first Latin American pontiff and the first Jesuit pope. Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be present.

Following the funeral, the Vatican will enter the "sede vacante" period, during which 135 voting cardinals will convene to elect a new pope. Pope Francis had appointed approximately 110 of these cardinals, potentially influencing the ideological direction of his successor. The conclave is expected to begin between May 5 and May 11, after a nine-day mourning period.
